What to expect in your first week of residential rehab
Feeling nervous before rehab is completely normal. Knowing what the first week usually looks like can make that first step a little easier.

Deciding to start a residential program is a big step, and it is completely normal to feel anxious about it. Much of that fear comes from not knowing what to expect. Here is what the first week typically looks like at The Sanctuary Retreat.
Before you arrive
We start with a confidential phone assessment to understand your situation, health and goals. If there is a chance you will need medical support with withdrawal, this is planned in advance with medical partners. We also send you a packing list and answer any practical questions about work, family or travel to Yallingup.
Day one: arriving and settling in
You will be welcomed by our team and shown to your private room. The first day is deliberately gentle. There is time to unpack, walk the grounds, share a meal and rest. Many people say simply arriving was the hardest part.
Days two and three: getting to know you
You will meet your therapist for a longer assessment session. Together you will talk about what brought you here and what you want to change, and begin shaping your personal plan. If you are going through withdrawal, the focus is on safety, comfort and sleep.
Finding a rhythm
By mid-week most guests settle into a daily routine. A typical day might include:
- a morning walk, stretch or mindfulness session
- an individual therapy session or a small-group workshop
- nourishing meals prepared on site
- time in nature, from coastal walks to quiet moments by the ocean
- free time to read, rest or reflect
Feelings that may come up
The first week can bring a mix of relief, tiredness, sadness and even frustration. All of it is normal. Our team checks in with you every day, and nothing is compulsory. You can always ask to slow down.
By the end of the week
Most people notice they are sleeping a little better, thinking more clearly and starting to feel hopeful. That is the foundation the rest of your program builds on.
